"Learning about others helps me be a better friend."
Noah O'Brien -Age 5
I've been having these talks, Real World Issues, for about 2 years with my mom, Naomi O'Brien who believes It's so important to make sure us kids know racism isn't okay and what to do when we see it or hear it.
My mom says, I always ask a million questions all day every day, and she loves it.
Some big questions, that you may have seen&/heard us tackled together are, "Why do people look different?" When us kids ask you this question, what do you say? When we don't ask, what do you say? How do you reinforce that different is amazing, but not better or less when it comes to humans? Phew, that was a tough one that needs to be answered and intentionally discussed.
When my mom is not taping our conversations, we have them as they come up naturally. During a tv show, after a book, outside, at dinner... whenever it’s necessary based on something I have said or done or something someone else has said or done.
Join me and my mom as we continue to ask tough questions and take the time to collectively Talk About It: Real World Issues.
